  THOUGHT FROM THE HEART

I Believe

I remember being asked one time, "Do you believe in divorce?"  "Yes."  I replied.  I believe that it happens.  Sometimes it is even better for a couple to go through a divorce than stay together.

"Do you believe in the trinity?", I was once asked by a Jehovah's Witness.  "Yes."  I replied.  "I believe that the trinity is the best way that Christians have to discuss the identity of God in this world:  one God in three persons.  I don't understand it, but I believe in the trinity.

"Do you believe in _______________? )you fill in the blank.

Santa Claus, the Easter Bunny, the Tooth Fairy, landing on the moon, Elvis's death, extra-terrestrials, ghosts, Bigfoot, conspiracy theories, and crop circles are all items on the list of things about which I have been asked about my belief.

We already know what we believe about most of these things.  Our minds are made up. We might be entertained by a discussion or TV show about other people's belief, but we know where we stand.

Now, I want you to consider your beliefs about the basic tenants of the Christian faith.  For centuries, the church has pretty much agreed on the basic principles of the faith.  These tenants have been laid out in the "Apostle's Creed."  From now through June 8, 2008, the sermons will be focused on our basic beliefs as Christians.  We will look at our belief in God, Jesus, the Holy Spirit, the church, the resurrection, and judgment.

It will be a good time to invite someone that might be wondering about what our church believes.  It will be a good time to consider what you believe.  So, walk with me through these next few weeks as we study, consider, and reflect on what we believe.
