Lazarus and
the Freezer
Like the disciples
at the resurrection of Lazarus, we were afraid to open the top of my
14 cubic foot chest freezer. We were smart enough to know just how
bad it was going to stink. Just like Lazarus, it had been dead for
four days, baking in the June heat of a parked U-Haul trailer. You
see, in the chaos and exhaustion of our move, we forgot to plug in
the freezer. So, there it sat. Quietly and patiently it sat until I
went back to the trailer to unload a few of our belongings. That is
when I saw the freezer just sitting there... waiting to be plugged
in. Inside it was spoiling, because it had no power source. That got
me to thinking about the church. I wonder how many of us are just
waiting to get plugged in to the ministry of Christ's Church. I
wonder how many folks are patiently sitting back and waiting to find
their place in the work and ministry of Hartford First United
Methodist Church? I wonder how many days have passed since we last
found ourselves empowered by the breath of the Holy Spirit? I wonder
how many hearts are spoiling because they have been isolated for too
long?
Do you want to serve
Christ in a new way here in Hartford? Do you want to reignite an old
passion for ministry you once had? Do you have some new ideas that
could help us make disciples for Jesus Christ? Are you passionate
for sharing the gospel? Do you feel run down, tired, and lacking the
spiritual drive that used to be the hallmark of your Christian
service? Do you see a need in our church or community that no one is
addressing? Do you have hopes for our future, but are stumped on
what to do about it? Are you plugged in?
I want to invite you
to come and meet with me. Share your dreams and your hopes for our
church with me. come by the office and sit a spell with me. i want
to help you get plugged in to the ministry of Christ here in
Hartford. I am convinced that God is doing great things here and all
we have to do is get "plugged in" to what the Lord is doing. My
prayer is that we overcome our fears of the unknown and roll away
the stones that keep us from Christ and His life giving words. May
we hear Jesus call us to "come forth", just like Lazarus. May we
come forth with life, enthusiasm, urgency, and excitement as we get
plugged in to the ministry of Christ at First United Methodist
Church.
