Rene' lives in Guatemala with his family. They live in a hut with no electricity and no running water. His family is very poor and rely on every family member to help provide support for the family. When he was a teenager, Rene' helped provide some support for the family but then he lost both arms and legs in an electrocution accident. While Rene' was still in the hospital recovering, Mr. Byrd - a member of First United Methodist Church met him for the first time during a mission trip to Guatemala and a lifetime friendship developed. The Lord has continued to direct Mr. Byrd in an ongoing effort to help Rene' and his family. He has helped to get the Shriners Children's Hospital to assist with medical needs while he was under 18, however Rene' is now considered an adult and that help is no longer available to him. |

GUATEMALA FACTS
BACKGROUND:
Guatemala was freed of Spanish colonial
rule in 1821. During the second half of the 20th century, it experienced a
variety of military and civilian governments as well as a 36-year guerrilla
war. In 1996, the government signed a peace agreement formally ending the
conflict, which had led to the death of more than 100,000 people and had
created some 1 million refugees. |
